Personality:
When Merrin was young, about six years before the start of the game, she survived the massacre that killed her people, making her one of the last living Nightsisters. Not long after, a Jedi named Taron Malicos crash-landed on her planet, and these two events played a huge role in shaping her personality and the rest of her life. Because she was still consumed by trauma and grief, Malicos was able to manipulate her into teaching him her magick and giving up control of Dathomir to him by promising her a way to get revenge on the people who killed her sisters.
This quest for vengeance drove her for five years, turning her into an angry, mistrustful person. When our protagonist, Cal, first meets Merrin, she is actually an antagonist, an obstacle that he has to overcome if he wants to progress in his mission to obtain the holocron. Even though he tries to make peace with her, she rejects an alliance and goes on the offensive, compelling the Nightbrothers and raising her sisters from the dead to attack him. She taunts him throughout his journey on Dathomir, openly hostile.
Once Malicos betrays her, however, things start to change. When Cal returns to Dathomir later on, she approaches him, and while she's not exactly friendly, she gives him enough of a chance so that they're able to bond over their similar traumas and eke out enough of a partnership to take down Malicos. While she is slow to trust and open up, she's not incapable of it, and all it really took was a moment of shared human connection to show that she's actually kind, compassionate, and earnest at her core.
In fact, much of her motivation for joining Cal and his crew is to help protect the Force-sensitive children in the holocron, as she fears that they will be hunted down and killed if the Empire manages to get their hands on it, just like her people. It's also revealed later on that Malicos had ordered her to attack Cere and Greez, but after discovering that they weren't a threat, she defied him instead, demonstrating that she was never really a villain at all.
That said, she doesn't always show it. She is blunt and direct and only occasionally softens her words, which can make her come off as intimidating or standoffish, but it also ensures that she isn't a pushover. Her sense of humor, while very much there, is dry and deadpan, so it can be hard to tell when she's joking, since she has an excellent poker face. In fact, when she isn't angrily siccing her zombie sisters on people, she's actually very calm and composed and tends to show her emotions in more subtle ways.
While she isn't particularly outgoing, she still makes the effort to bond with Cere and Greez once she joins their crew, showing interest in their lives and opening up about her past. She's curious too, as she is eager to leave Dathomir and explore the galaxy she's never seen before, as well as expressing interest in learning how to pilot the Mantis and asking Cere questions about the Jedi. Being alone for so long, with only Malicos for company, however, has made her awkward with outward displays of affection, both giving and receiving, and she seems to be more comfortable showing it with teasing.
She's also thoughtful and empathetic, as she's the first person to question the crew's mission to rebuild the Jedi Order, since using the holocron would irrevocably change the lives of every child on the list it contains. Even though their intentions are good, she's wise enough to already see the consequences of exposing those children to the Empire, potentially trapping them in the same cycle of trauma, loss, and grief that she and Cal were.
Abilities: As a Nightsister, Merrin is able to use magick. This technically also makes her Force-sensitive, as Nightsister magick is drawn from the dark side of the Force, the energy that is created by all living things in a Star War. While her magick is most powerful on her homeworld of Dathomir, she is still a strong practitioner even off-world. Some of her abilities include:
In theory, she could also use other magick the Nightsisters do in canon, such as healing, voodoo, creating objects out of thin air, etc, as well as the potential to use or learn any Force abilities that Jedi have. Whew.
Also, Zabraks have two hearts, so they have a little more speed and endurance than baseline humans.
Personal Item: Her talisman, which she uses to strengthen her magick
